Proposed introduction at Oliver Wolcott Library:
Good evening, I'm Heather Wilder,
Technology Coordinator and Development assistant at the Oliver Wolcott Library
In the library tradition of bringing you free staged radio plays such as last year's It's a Wonderful Life,
The Maltese Falcon and The Shadow,
we welcome you tonight to Charles Dickens' 1843 classic A Christmas Carol.
Because of Friday's tragedy in Sandy Hook, we pondered canceling this show,
but ultimately decided to bring it to you now because of its important message.
Thank you for taking the time to be with us here tonight.
In 1934, this staged radio play first aired across America, and continued again each Christmas Eve until 1939,
when it was performed by The Campbell Soup Playhouse, exactly as you will hear it this evening.
It starred Lionel Barrymore as Ebenezer Scrooge and was narrated by Orson Welles.
We will be recording this sound track as a Library podcast, for you to hear again whenever you like,
so please turn your cell phones off.
But sing along with the adult choir, not the children's choir, if you know the words to the carols.
Tonight's music will be provided for you by Justin Zitnay at his keyboard.
